On a picture-perfect, windless day more than 2000 fans from around the remote Southland province in New Zealand's South Island piled through the gates of the Frew brothers' 2500-acre farm to witness some of the best riders in the world throw down on the FMX, BMX and MTB dirt jumps at the 2011 Unit Farm Jam.

There were upsets aplenty in the Unit FMX competition, with last year's winner and hot favorite Levi Sherwood withdrawing midway through the event with some mechanical problems with his ride.

"My bike bogged on the up-ramp of one of the jumps at the end of the second heat," the 19-year-old explained. "It wasn't worth risking it, especially as I'm only just coming back from a long time off the bike with a knee operation, and the X-Fighters series starts in about six weeks."

Red Bull/Unit rider Nick Franklin also had issues with his bike bogging, but kept riding before getting snapped off on an under-rotated backflip. He walked away with little more than grazed forearms, which, considering the size of the crash, is a small miracle.
